Abstract

A strategic entrepreneur uses all the traits, skills and resources of the classic entrepreneur, not to build their own business but in order to implement the strategy of their employer. Often working on the fringes of the organisation and outside of the normal processes and systems, they can be critical in the execution of higher risk strategies, such as internationalisation, especially in more bureaucratic organisations, such as universities. This case analyses the role of a strategic entrepreneur in implementing international staff exchanges as part of a UK university internationalisation strategy, the risks and rewards of this approach. Based on a recent first, second and third person action research project conducted by the author, it recounts actual experiences and approaches in the practice of entrepreneurship in the context of a large, diversified and bureaucratic institution. Strategic entrepreneurship can be particularly effective in times of crisis, restructure and cutbacks.
