Abstract

This output involved a series of curated exhibitions devised by Paul Moss and Miles Thurlow, to launch Workplace Gallery as a showcase for early-career artists working in the North East. The output also includes follow-up exhibitions involving Hales Gallery and the Glasgow and Zoo Art Fairs. Hipkin’s contributions to the project, which began when he was a MA Art Practices student at Northumbria, were supported by Arts Council North East and commercial funders. The resulting sculptures elaborated the experimental use of found objects that earned this researcher a distinction at master’s level. From a technical perspective, the works involved collecting damaged or dismantled materials and then adapting or reinventing them through skilled remodelling, casting and re-assemblage. The results suggest forgotten, or misunderstood, functionality in a similar fashion to the work of Richard Wentworth. However Hipkin conveys a stronger sense of post-industrialism, a legacy of the Newcastle environment to which he returned in 2005 following full-time employment in Gormley’s studio, in London. These interests and skills have led the artist to undertake the technical and conceptual challenge of translating studio production into exhibition installations for other artists (a topic that Hipkin developed in the MA and PhD seminar series of 2005). As a result, Dorsett selected Hipkin for a twelve month (part-time) Leverhume Artist in Residence project which began February 2007 (Dorsett, output 4). This has extended the scope of the output to address the collaborative and participatory nature of curating temporary and permanent sculptures for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust. Hipkin is currently negotiating a large commission for Middlesbrough PFI hospital which will commence in February 2008 Information on the Workplace exhibitions.
