Abstract

The properties of SnS thin films deposited by thermal evaporation are reported for different substrate temperatures and for a post-deposition heat treatment in argon. The as-deposited films showed an increase in grain and crystallite size with an increase in substrate temperature and following the post-deposition heat treatment in argon. Films deposited for lower substrate temperatures contained secondary phases of Sn2S3 and experienced significant Sn loss during annealing. The increase in grain size was accompanied by a reduction in micro-strain as the substrate temperature increases as well as a reduction in optical energy bandgap from 1.58 to 1.53 eV. An optimum growth temperature of 300 °C is obtained for SnS films deposited by thermal evaporation.
