Abstract

Based at Wansbeck District Council, positioned within the Wansbeck Initiative, the Wansbeck Online community portal project was established in 2003. Wansbeck Online aims to build community capacity, and develop awareness and understanding of ICT and web based information amongst its users (residents, and community and voluntary groups). The project has progressed from its focus on website design and function, to development and promotion of its content. In evaluating the Wansbeck Community Online project, the research team assessed the extent to which the project has achieved a range of objectives, including: •Achievement of relevant targets and policy objectives, locally and nationally •Effective development and delivery of the project •Increase in awareness and understanding of ICT amongst service users •Building overall capacity in the local community •Offering Value for money •Delivering examples of best practice Drawing upon experience of other similar projects, the final report made recommendations for the future of the project, informing its succession strategy and identifying issues around funding, staffing, management, promotion, and community engagement.
