Abstract

This chapter examines the intersections between American indie cinema and independent music cultures. Music is considered to be the area within which indie gained prominence as a concept; Michael Newman claims that indie first emerged in the field of popular music but then gained salience in the 1990s as a general term for non-mainstream culture in a range of other fields, including film. The independent film sector underwent significant growth in the 1990s, which extended Hollywood involvement in aspects of “independent” filmmaking. It was in the 2000s that indie music was more frequently incorporated into films in a more marked, sometimes self-conscious, fashion. Indie music has shaped and influenced certain aspects of indie film, contributing to its overall texture in some cases and to its narrative and thematic points of reference, as well as to the production practices of some of those involved in the sector and the discursive regimes within which it is located.
