Abstract

Management at all levels have used decision support tools for a variety of operational and strategic decisions. It is generally recognised that the decisions at the strategic level are both complex and uncertain. They frequently involve simultaneous consideration of several internal and external variables. The executive have long benefitted from the use of supporting tools and techniques. However, these tools often focus on specific issues and are considered in isolation from their complementary tools. The size, nature and complexity of the variables have prevented development of their systematic encapsulation into developing a coherent holistic decision support tool for strategic decisions. The premise of this research is that highly strategic decisions require not just the analysis of several variables but are also reliant on the consideration of several other decisions at various levels of the organisation. The aim of the current research is to develop a support system for strategic decisions by proposing a framework that integrates a network of decision nodes at different levels of the organisation. These decision nodes are aided by tools that are deterministic, thus requiring straightforward calculation or optimisation; or they can be reliant on heuristic approaches and judgement of the decisionmaker. Therefore, the work presents a conceptual framework for executive decision support system.
