Abstract

This output included an 18 residency and solo exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, organised by Gill Saunders (senior curator, Word and Image Department), with support from Arts Council England (£11,200). Due to the residency’s, it has recently been extended until December 2008. The work undertaken was part of Bowen’s long-term project to pioneer new forms of audience engagement for drawing. Bowen collaborated with curators and conservators to create graphic works to be shown alongside material from the V&A archives. She also sought the expertise of the Science Museum’s senior curator, Neil Brown, to help construct a replica 18th century Claude Glass which was used as a drawing tool to observe and record the real-time events that effect exhibited works in the V&A galleries (i.e. ambient light and shifting reflections). A substantial publication accompanies the project (Art Editions North and V&A Publications). This includes essays by Cork, Godfrey, Saunders and Webber. A lecture on the residency was given by Bowen at the launch hosted by the Daiwa Foundation. The residency allowed Bowen to place the intimacy of studio processes within the context of an environment dedicated to the dissemination of cultural knowledge. A weblog (www.vam.ac.uk/sianbowen) charted the unfolding nature of her experiments and the Museum’s public lectures series provided opportunities to meet and address museum visitors. Bowen’s interest in the external and provisional qualities that effect drawings led to her inclusion in David Buckman’s book, ‘Artists in Britain Since 1945’, Art Dictionaries Ltd, 2006, and Deanna Petherbridge’s lecture series on contemporary drawing practice, ‘Drawing towards Enquiry. Enquiry towards Drawing’, National Gallery, March 2006. Similar works also appeared in ‘Drawing Breath - 10 Years of the Jerwood Drawing Prize’. The V&A residency has led to Bowen being nominated for the Northern Arts Prize, Leeds Art Gallery, 2007 (catalogue forthcoming).
