Abstract

This paper presents soil matric suction measurements on a sandy clay material of intermediate plasticity, originated from an experimental embankment of the BIONICS project. Suction measurements using filter paper and a high capacity suction probe were used to determine the soil water retention behaviour as the soil dried naturally. Also, the pressure plate method was used to determine the water retention behaviour by imposing suctions by means of axis translation. These methods were assessed by comparing the soil water retention curves obtained. The results have shown that different soil water retention curves were obtained when using the different methods. Some plausible errors in the determination of soil water retention curves are suggested and the mechanisms behind these errors are proposed.
