Abstract

This design development and research was conducted under a KTP with P&L Systems Ltd (research funding £90K). The aim was to create a product innovation strategy within the company that would turn them into a design-led organisation. The focus was to develop commercially successful innovative product ranges for manufacture, including the process of securing appropriate IP protection. This KTP has further supported Smith’s work and approach in integrating design analysis and innovation tools within organisations. It used practices developed from work with Scientific Generics as the basis for translation to a large SME. Smith worked with Holmes to develop a new range of pest control lighting, based on previous UV corona discharge medical applications developed within the CfDR. A patent was granted to the company: GB2381181 to protect the product range. Smith’s key contribution was to develop an analysis framework into which innovation could be assessed and validated. The product outcomes were unique; changing market perceptions of pest control products from a severe ‘engineering aesthetic’ to products more associated with the world of contract lighting. The project was the winner of the 2004 ‘Best Knowledge Transfer Partnership’ in the UK, the first design–based KTP to achieve this accolade. Electronic Pest Control Product Manufacture is an industry where copying products is common, but Smith’s research showed that it was vital to develop new knowledge within the market to survive global competition. The KTP encouraged the company to undertake research collaboration with entomology researchers at Bristol University, and formed the basis for ongoing projects and collaborations with Unilever, Hasbro and Lego, as part of the Northumbria University Design Innovation Lab initiative.
