Abstract

17th October 1962 and other facts is written and performed by Richard Stockwell. The play is an exploration of autobiographical performance. It looks at private and public memories and explores how they are changed or distorted by the passage of time. It compares historical facts from the second world war with family anecdotes and photographs and asks whether the facts tell us anything at all – or is all the truth in the stories and their contradictions.
By using these stories and others and tying them into my own personal recollections around important touchstones in my own life, births and deaths, family mementos the play examines the nature of memory and the stories we tell in creating our understanding of ourselves and in ordering the chaos of life.
