Abstract

Realist approaches are an evolving field, which, while presenting an appealing format for the evaluation of complex interventions, poses particular challenges when applied at postgraduate level. This paper is based on a recently completed PhD using realist evaluation, and is co-authored by a supervisor (ML) an examiner (SC), and the student (SD). This studentship was permeated by the interlinked systems of practice, theory and realist research and sat within a translational paradigm in line with our broader research endeavours. A realist approach was well suited to develop messages that would have both resonance and impact on practice and applicability potential for our future programme of research.
