Abstract

The conference paper and presentation discussed the iterative and serial processes employed by the artist Paul Goodfellow. A spectrum between systematic and rule-based art of artists such as Sol LeWitt through to the intuitive and subjective art of artists such as Cy Twombly was discussed. Goodfellow positioned his work between these two poles and illustrated how by employing the systems and rules of minimalism and conceptual art he could operate in a way that is both intuitive and repeatable. He illustrated how he achieved this by drawing from his experience in data visualisation, V J-ing and animation to produce work that captured the spontaneous, but through processes that could be repeated again and again.
