Additional Information: Volumes 471-472 Paper presented at a conference which was subsequently invited to be published in the Materials Science forum. Research is supported by industry (SNA-Europe, Sweden) as they required the fundamental behaviour of the cutting edges throughout their life cycle. The research work achieved a picture library of the failure modes and mechanisms during the wear cycle of bi-metal blades. Led to a fundamental understanding of the product and manufacturing process. PhD project (Persson) supported by the Industry which aroused wider interest among European partners associated with cutting-off process and new substrate materials and recommendations for new materials specifications.
