Is recycling the ultimate solution for the better world? No! And neither is up-cycling. If so, what can we do with the products that already exist in the world? How can sustainability be ascertained?
Today design is not merely responsible for creating value for new artefacts, but also rediscovering the value of existing products that people do not need. This presentation attempts to provoke a dialogue, by demonstrating a service design approach, which set out to rediscover the value of e-waste.

- Speaker Biographies:

Contributor 1. Eunsol Hwang
While studying Architecture for my BA, I learned integrated studies and gained a wide range of interests including visual arts and sustainable design. This experience led me to have interests in diverse disciplines of design.
Recently, I have finished the MA Design Course at Northumbria University. During the course, my personal projects and thesis aimed to find an ultimate solution for e-waste, where I applied a service design approach.
I am now researching the psychological empowerment of users for developing a theory regarding sustainable service design, believing that I – as a designer – can contribute to creating a better future.

Contributor 2. Dr Mersha Aftab
Currently a senior lecturer in Design Innovation at the Department of Design, I started working with Northumbria University, in June 2012. My research investigates the functional leadership of design in multinationals. I have collaborated with Philips Design, Daimler, Airbus and Unilever, which has contributed towards value creation of design within multinationals and beyond. I deliver knowledge-based modules to Master students at Northumbria, and supervise several Master theses aiming to use design as a vehicle to find solutions for the wicked problems of the world.
