This essay introduces the English originals together with twenty of Gascoyne’s previously unknown, French self-translations, which Scott discovered after his death and transcribed from various notebooks in the UK and America. The French texts were edited by Mounic in close collaboration with Scott. The poet Emmanuel Hiriart asked Scott through Mounic if he could print his article and a selection of the poems (in French only) in his magazine Poésie / Première: revue poétique et littéraire (novembre 2006 / février 2007). Further Gascoyne texts submitted by Scott appear in Temporel, numéro 3 (mai 2007) and in the forthcoming numéro 4 (octobre 2007).
