Abstract

[Just as important as knowing whether tourism is going well or badly is understanding the internal tensions and the processes of change acting on Menorca. The future of the tourist sector depends not so much on the evolution of tourist demand as on its capacity for transformation.

This paper analyses the inertias, dissonances and changes which play upon the Minorcan tourist industry. It is a question of seeing in which direction (or directions) tourism is heading. The hypothesis proposed is that very diverse forces are acting upon Menorca, and not all are pushing in the same direction. The future of the Minorcan tourist model depends on the manner in which these tensions are resolved. This paper analyses the evolution of tourism from three different viewpoints: the market, tourist identity, and public policy. Tourism is not just a question of supply and demand, but also of geography, culture and identity. The need for a more sustainable model of tourism is revealed, a model which can confront the challenges of globalisation in a bid for environmental quality and ethical tourism.]
