Abstract

2.5” Hard Disk Drive (HDD) has been used widely in many consumer electronic devices including laptop computers. A 2.5” HDD consists of a spindle motor, a voice coil motor, and other mechanical components, which are enclosed in a small aluminum mechanical casing. Performing noise control on such a small complex system has been a challenge. The conventional approach of using frequency analysis is not sufficient to identify the noise source from the HDD. In this paper, an approach is proposed to determine the noise source for 2.5” HDD using near field microphone array of the HDD to locate the noise source. Finite-element software, ANSYS software is used to compute the components that have the largest contribution to the noise.
