Abstract

This chapter sets off with an overview of the subject of sustainability in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector. Next, it discusses and critiques the application of mixed methods in researching the adoption of sustainable business practices within SMEs in the manufacturing sector. The study draws lessons from UK-based primary data containing two datasets: quantitative (QUAN) and qualitative (QUAL). Moreover, it discusses challenges associated with mixing data sets and study validation. Mixed method research offers an innovative, value-added strategy and great opportunity for the collection of rich and powerful data. However, the researcher needs to ensure the integration and nesting of data and avoid bias towards one or the other ontological positions of realism or relativism. Finally, the validation of the study is critical to justify the choice of data collection method, process of analysis and reporting mechanism.
