Abstract

This refereed paper examines the value and impact of the experiential learning developed within the DfID funded Development Partnerships in Higher Education (DeLPHE) project ‘Sustainability and Equitable Development: Interventions in India’s Rural Craft Industry’ in partnership with the Pearl Academy of Fashion, Delhi and Dastkar Kendra Ranthambore, Rajasthan. It explores the multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral initiatives undertaken to support the development of indigenous crafts enterprises and interrogates internalised understanding of the cultural complexities, social conditions and relationship between the producer (artisan enterprise) and the marketplace (consumer) as a pre-requisite for the development of learning systems, appropriate design strategies and skills necessary for transformation from survivalist enterprise to sustainable business. The research in progress was presented to and informed by NGOs, SMEs and Craft retail sector (Roundtable seminar, Delhi, 2009) and builds on previous projects and research undertaken within the DIUS funded England-Africa Partnership (EAP) project ‘Design, Health and Community’ (2007-08). Paper presented at the International Federation of Fashion & Textile Institutions (IFFTI) conference on ‘‘Fashion: Sustainability and Creativity’’ in Taiwan, March 2010 in relation to the sub-theme ‘Sustainable Fashion and Textile Education’. It interrogates the role and value of co-collaboration between staff, students and artisans in informing and developing design learning practices that have contemporary relevance to and promote ethical and sustainable practices within the craft sector, moving beyond the tactical design of products and artifacts into the realm of strategic influence, harnessing creative practice as a catalyst for change in people’s lives, through self-actualization and entrepreneurship and connects with (Guille’s) research within the DBIS funded Education Partnerships in Africa project ‘Knowledge Transfer in Design Education for Creative Entrepreneurship in East Africa’ (2009-11) in partnership with Makerere University, Uganda and Kenyatta University, Kenya and (Guille’s) consultancy with Traidcraft, UK to support design and systemic innovation within their supplier group, St. Mary's Mahila Shikshan Kendra.
