Additional Information:	This article, published in a solid specialist historical journal ,extends the themes first raised in ‘The People of Newcastle’. It is the first study of its kind and traces the change and decline of North Shields during the nineteenth century from a genteel development to mid-century slums. It explores the relationships between demographic change, changing household structures and housing provision in a ‘new’ town, and was facilitated by the discovery of a surviving manuscript from the 1811 census. This detailed case study is placed in its broader regional perspective. The work has gone on to be used in a recent Cambridge PhD. (Stuart A.
