This book is a revised version of the author’s doctoral thesis for Queen Mary, University of London. It offers a comprehensive study of the fifteenth-century manuscript Cancionero de Herberay des Essarts, conserved in the British Library, examining its codiological features and history, and placing the work in the context of the court of Juan II de Navarra and Carlos de Viana. It includes biographical profiles of the authors and a study of the cultural framework of coexistence between noblemen and conversos in the kingdom of Navarre. Special attention is drawn to the figures of Hugo de Urriés and Pere Torroella. Urriés, one of the key members of the Navarrese court who was sent on frequent embassies abroad, was also involved in the selection process of the LB2 textual tradition. Torroella, author of three of the pieces of prose, triggered the querelle des femmes in late fifteenth-century Spain and proves to be a figure of great importance in both military and cultural terms. The book includes a full bibliography, and an annotated transcription of the seven pieces included in the manuscript.
