Abstract

The wedge is one of six simple machines; a simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction and magnitude of a force and has been used for millennia.

This series of wedges are wrought from Brass, Phosphor Bronze and Gunmetal. They represent a genre of tool that for the most part are overlooked and often discarded after they have served their purpose. Making wedges in a durable, recyclable material gives these important machines value and presence that befits their valued use.

The intention is to give objects worth and value by design, concentrating on use, fit for purpose, proportion, material and craftsmanship. The products are first and foremost tools to be used, however, now they are a tactile precision instrument that can be appreciated as an object of value.
