Abstract

This design project, undertaken for a North East company, resulted in a new global market for Martel. Waters was the project director for the MCP8800 Printer Series, a new range of compact and lightweight portable thermal printers with a choice of data interfaces, including; Bluetooth, RS232, HP IR, IrDA Physical layer and IrDA Stack. The printers were designed for maximum versatility, capable of many different modes of operation, with numerous character sets and barcode printing facilities. This was the first time that Rapid Product Development was used with a North East SME, linked to a strategy to commercialise the design through advanced sales using a facsimile appearance/functional prototype through Stereo Lithography and vacuum casting. Waters was able to translate his research and product development expertise derived from global medical product development to a regional SME company, using commercialisation of medical innovation ERDF project (research income £604K). The success of this project enabled the CfDR to convince ONE NorthEast Centre of Excellence in Life Science to fund an integrated healthcare service training and product development (InSTeP) project to assist regional SMEs benefit from world-class product development practices and research. Lievesley was project manager for the development of the MCP8800 Printer, and the project has subsequently had extensive use as a case study to identify the benefits of digital new product development practice to other local SMEs, undergraduate and postgraduate students, prospective KTP partners and industrial audiences in Hong Kong, China and Japan. The product has also been used by ONE, Business Link and the Design Council to demonstrate the benefits design can have on an organisation. The projected annual sales figures were achieved within the first few months of production.
