Abstract

Treatment of methyl 2-aryl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylates 5 with N-bromosuccinimide followed by heating in the presence of an acid catalyst resulted in the formation of the corresponding methyl 2-aryl-1,2-dihydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylates 10 via an oxidation-dehydration sequence.
