Abstract

In this paper, the performance of an ultra-fast all-optical symmetric Mach Zehnder (SMZ) interferometer employed as a demultiplexer and/or a switch in an OTDM network is investigated by means of controlling the power of the control pulses. Employing control signals with optimum unequal powers results in reduced residual crosstalk, thus leading to improved bit error rate (BER) performance and reduced the received power penalty as low as 1 dB at 160 Gb/s. Investigation also show that using the optimum unequal-power control pulse scheme the switching extinction ratio is improved by> 10 dB compared to the conventional equal-power control pulse scheme.
