The asymmetric semiconductor laser amplifier loop mirror (ASLALOM) is analysed theoretically and a comprehensive model developed which describes the behavior of the loop. The inclusion of a travelling wave semiconductor laser amplifier (TWSLA) space time model shows that the resolution of the switch is determined by the length of the amplifier. An analysis of birefringence effects is presented and is simulated by including a waveplate within the ASLALOM. The effect of introducing an additional waveplate into the loop is also presented with a view to compensating birefingence.
