Abstract
'Ambiguities of Global Civil Society' provides a critical review of the discourse of global civil society that has become prominent amongst international organisations and in academic work in international relations and international political economy. The article argues that, contrary to this discourse, global civil society is not an unproblematic space for the democratisation and transformation of the emerging global polity. Rather, the prospects of global civil society are, at best, ambiguous and uncertain. The research and writing of this article was shared equally between the authors.
