Scandinavian writers have developed themselves as individuals and as artists by travelling in Europe. This places them well within the bounds of "travel writing" in general, but in more specific terms they are a special type of traveller, using their gift for observation and for creative writing to produce a range of narratives based on their journeys and sojourns. The article reviews the travel and writing practice of Ludvig Holberg,Hans Christian Andersen, August Strindberg, Henrik Ibsen and Georg Brandes to show how travel shapes their production.
