The achievements of Sir Henry Wellcome, founder of one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, are discussed. He was born 150 years ago. Pharmacists always had difficulty ensuring that patients took medicines in accurate doses. In 1843 an Englishman, William Brockenden, patented a machine for compressing a set of quantity of powder into a table. Burroughs and Wellcome used machines to produce pills for the British and European markets. Wellcome combined the words 'tablet' with 'ovoid' to form 'tabloid', registered it as trademark in 1884.
