Abstract

In grid connected PV systems, selecting an inverter capacity lower than the PV array capacity usually leads to better economy where the duration of peak irradiance values is limited. This paper discusses the technical and economic issues regarding selection of the optimal size of the inverter. The additional energy generated by selecting the optimal size for different types of inverters used in grid connected PV systems is evaluated. Different economic issues relating to the choice of the inverter are discussed. This paper also considers issues related to standard inverter rating selection (higher or lower than the optimal size) due to the restricted sizes available on the market.
