The book is the third in a ‘trilogy’ by McKelvey, published by Blackwell, providing professional knowledge about innovative thinking when designing garments. It adopts an analytical problem solving and pedagogic research approach to investigate the relationship between fashion design process and innovative practices in terms of their outcomes and contexts of application. It combines practical design projects and portfolio exercises to show how the design process can be successfully applied to satisfy market needs and trends. The same approach is used to encourage the development of versatility and special attention is paid to computer-aided design and its professional application. A comprehensive variety of design processes and techniques are examined for example; research material from sketchbooks to trend information and how to utilise and analyse these. The design process is expanded and is discussed from initial concepts through design development, prototype production, promotional activities and marketing ideas utilising graphic styles and different media for communication. McKelvey is the principal author of the book, being responsible for the pedagogic design and content with support from Munslow in relation to the specialist information concerning the fashion design process and its points of application to market contexts. McKelvey’s research interests are explicit in this book with the expansion from fashion into the traditional ‘graphics’ and ‘new media’ disciplines. The publication’s originality lies in the way it supports the student’s ability to reflect and think critically about their development as a designer. The book is unique because examples of design practice are contextualised and made explicit and then explored further using a specifically designed case study. The publication was translated into Chinese in 2005. 7-5064-3155-6/TS.1877, Raffles-Lasalle, Beijing, China Textile Press, with an accompanying CD-ROM, 7-5064-3066-5/TS 1841. Blackwell will publish a fourth book by McKelvey on ‘Fashion Prediction’ in 2008, due for completion in December 2007.
