Additional Information:	This article is based upon secondary literature and archival records and discusses patterns of Baltic cultural traffic in the seventeenth century through a comparison of two major ports, Lübeck and Danzig. It is the revised version of an invited paper given at the conference on ‘Cultural Traffic and Cultural Transformation around the Baltic Sea, 1450-1720’ held in Copenhagen in 2003 and is published in a special issue of the Scandinavian Journal of History, edited by Stephen T. Christensen and Badeloch Noldus. Both the article and the conference from which it arises, are the first attempt to consider the context and process of cultural traffic in the early modern Baltic. It is also the first English-language analysis of the secondary literature. The work is a development of Cowan’s involvement in the European Science Foundation-funded project, ‘Cultural exchange in early modern Europe’ and the methodological issues which it confronted. It also draws in part on his chapter on ‘Nodes and networks’ in D. Calabi and S Turk Christensen (eds), Cities and Cultural Change in Early Modern Europe (Cambridge, 2007), and on a conference paper on Danzig given to a cultural exchange research workshop in Ghent.
