To achieve a high level of performance from a photovoltaic (PV) system, it is necessary to understand the dependence of the output on the operating conditions and the components chosen and to regularly check the performance obtained against expected values. This chapter discusses how to predict system performance from knowledge of the design parameters and how to measure and analyse the real performance of a system, including consideration of measurement uncertainties and fault identification. It also considers how to forecast the {PV} system output based on observation of changing solar conditions, which is expected to become of more importance as the penetration level of {PV} systems within the electricity grid increases.
