We present and evaluate a multiple-input multiple-output visible light communications (MIMO-VLC) system using imaging angle diversity receiver (ImADR). Differing from the conventional imaging receiver (ImR), which has a two-dimensional circular detector array consisting of vertically oriented detectors, the ImADR has a three-dimensional spherical-cap-shaped detector array composed of angle diversity detectors. Compared with ImR, ImADR has a wider field-of-view and a smaller area of detector array. Our studies show that a 4×4 MIMO-VLC system employing ImADR can increase the communication coverage by about 130% at a target bit error rate of 10-3, compared with the system employing the conventional ImR.
