Drawing on research funded by the British Academy, 'The Making of Investor Subjects' focuses on the individualisation of responsibility and risk in US and UK pensions. As state pensions are minimised and employers' commitments to occupational pensions wane, individuals are increasingly taking responsibility for their financial security and freedom in retirement. The article argues that these processes of change are embodied, requiring the assembly of investor subjects who embrace the risk/reward of financial markets in the present in order to provide for their future. The target readership for the article is sociologists, geographers and political economists of pensions and finance.
