The temperature values that can minimise degradation of the battery under different cycling conditions are identified using electrochemical analysis, battery test results and modelling battery life prediction. An analysis of the electrochemistry of the cell shows that the cell capacity depends on four characteristics - diffusion impedance, charge transfer impedance, loss of lithium and ohmic or internal resistance. The effect of temperature on each characteristic is analysed, extensive battery testing is described and shown to support the analysis. Accordingly, recommendations for battery temperature conditioning can be made to inform manufacturers and all those interested in prolonging battery life.
