Abstract

Inverse methods deal with the indirect estimation of parameters. When set of measurements (y) can be linked to the parameters to be estimated (x) through a functionf, i.e.,y = f(x), then the inverse problem is that of estimatingxgiven the measurementsyand the functionf. In the terminology of inverse methods, the functionf is commonly referred to as the forward model, xas the system state, andyas the measurement vector.
