This chapter discusses the techniques for enhancing the performance of visible light communications (VLC) systems. It begins with the introduction to a parallel data transmission technique that helps to increase the system transmission capacity. This technique exploits parallel data transmission using multiple light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that are generally used in homes and offices for lighting. Parallel transmission is based on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications systems where the VLC channel matrix is predetermined to separate and recover multiple data streams. In this chapter, we will present the background theory for this approach and discuss how to recover the transmitted data at the receiver. Case study, simulation, and practical results will be presented to illustrate the MIMO system performance.
