Abstract

The paper proposed a new control signal scheme to reduce the residual crosstalk of a symmetric Mach-Zahnder (SMZ) switch and improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of the switch. The simulation results showed that the SMZ switch is capable of demultiplexing incoming optical time division multiplexed OTDM packets at 80 Gb/s which is two times faster than any semiconductor-based switches at low BER. The main findings of this research shows the importance of the control signal scheme employed in a SMZ based switch to improve its performance at ultra high speed communication networks.
