Abstract
This chapter surveys the variety of protest acts found at sea. Drawing upon historical case studies and more contemporary examples, the chapter foregrounds contested power relations as a central facet of understanding ocean spaces. This chapter considers acts of protest found at sea, protests constructed through movement across the sea and landed protests articulating grievances of the sea. Through these examples the chapter reflects on the wide-ranging repertoire of maritime protest acts and suggests that a more open understanding of protest allows for the inclusion of organised demonstration as well as smaller resistant acts, such as exits and hunger strikes.
