Abstract
What was ‘depression’ before the modern term existed ? This volume and its companion examine the difficult question of whether depression can be said to exist in the context of the European experience in the long eighteenth century, and how it might have been represented in various media, including literature, art and music. This second volume concentrates on the literary and societal aspects of this notion, exploring the link between this illness, its physical symptoms and the act of writing.
