Abstract

It is widely accepted that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast consumption has been linked to numerous positive outcomes, including healthy weight maintenance and greater nutrient intake. In an attempt to encourage healthy breakfast habits, many primary and secondary schools provide children with a breakfast meal within a breakfast club, which takes place on the school premises prior to the start of the formal school day. To date, research into school breakfast clubs has predominantly investigated the impact of the breakfast meal, while the potential importance of the social environment has received very little attention. Research is currently being conducted to ascertain whether breakfast club attendance has an impact on children's relationships within school. Data presented shows that the allocation of free time to play with friends in breakfast club before the start of the school day is important to the children involved; it is also something that staff in breakfast clubs are keen to provide, thus suggesting that breakfast clubs might have a role to play within schools that goes above and beyond the provision of a breakfast meal. Additionally, the impact of breakfast club attendance on children's social relationships will be discussed.
