Abstract

Discusses an in-depth study of 16 secondary school pupils in years 9 and 10 from 4 contrasting schools in the UK. It aimed to discover how they interacted with electronic information resources, focusing on: technology; cognitive factors, including information and navigation skills; affective factors, e.g. motivation and confidence; and social factors including affordability of access and peer collaboration and tutoring. Describes examples of young people's preference for working together. Such collaboration has benefits which can be lost where there are policies of allowing only 1 person per computer. Reports differences observed in computer use by boys and girls and their assessment of their own skills.
