This book explores design in 20th century Britain not only as discrete ‘things’, but as ‘cultures’ ,part of a wider social, political and economic matrix.. It considers theoretical questions relating to Englishness, Britishness, modernity and tradition through detailed case studies. Examining the periphery as well as the centre by drawing upon primary research from the ‘North’ as well as the ‘South’, this regional perspective throws new light on accepted ways of ‘seeing’ showing both the contestation and re-negotiation of dominant design discourses.

Additional Information: | This commissioned book, part of a prestigious new series from Reaktion Press, offers an opportunity for Buckley to draw upon on-going research themes, but also to develop new research, eg. housing. Prompted by this, a new paper ‘Homeliness By Design: working class housing and interiors in Britain in the 1920s’ is to be published in Gender and History in 2009. A bid to Leverhulme for a project to explore Visual Culture in 1920s’ Britain develops from this book, but it also aims to extend the successful ‘Impressionism in Britain’. Buckley received travel grants in 2004-5 and a sabbatical in 2005-6 from Northumbria University to undertake research and complete the first draft of this book. Of this book, the designer Jasper Morrison wrote: “Thankfully not just another book about design, but a book about design and society and how they interact. Cheryl Buckley's book is all the more interesting and relevant to designers, students and anyone interested in the structure of Britishness.” It makes a contribution to a field that has some surprising gaps, namely the literature about design in Britain in the 20thC.
