New ways of knowing disability, essentially generated by disabled people themselves, have increasingly informed debates amongst theorists, policy-makers and practitioners. Disablism, in all its diverse and pernicious manifestations, is being challenged. It is becoming recognized that the policies and practices of social work and social care can compound disablism but can also challenge the discrimination experienced by disabled people. Here we summarize the new ways of knowing disability and their implications for social work practice.
