Abstract

This book chapter is featured in an edited book by internationally recognised authors in the field of international technical textiles specialising in cold weather applications both from academic sectors and commercial. The book is divided into 3 parts. Part 1 examines the effects of design and material properties in the performance of cold weather clothing; Part 2 looks at evaluation methods while Part 3 reviews the performance of key innovative products. This chapter is included in Part 1 acknowledging the importance of biomimetic principles in the design of functional clothing systems. Biomimetics is a relatively new idea to the readers of this type of publication therefore part of the chapter explains the relevance of biomimetics and textiles and reviews existing technologies.
