Abstract

Set in a local 'Stand 'n' Tan' single mam Joanne is preparing for her imminent wedding with a little help from her baby sister Sarah and chief bridesmaid and best mate, lesbian nurse Sandra. But like most weddings, things aren’t running smoothly... The girl’s good friend Mary is in hospital with cancer and all seems lost when Joanne's dressmaker loses the tips of her fingers serving 4oz of Brie at the cheese counter in Fenwick's. Thankfully, Maryam, a woman seeking asylum from Iran, saves the day by agreeing to take over the pearl trim. But Joanne’s mam, Theresa, is far from pleased... Amidst the hilarity of duty free tabs and an impromptu false tan session, 'Stand 'n' Tan' explores prejudice and fear and what happens to people when they're faced with the loss of life, love, youth, land, liberty, a gold ring and a neighbour's dog...

Written by Catrina McHugh around characters developed in drama workshops during 2003, 'Stand 'n' Tan' was first toured regionally in 2004 and again in an updated form in 2009, directed by Fiona MacPherson.
