Abstract

On the Hartlepool Headland there once stood a large geological feature known as the Elephant Rock. It would be an inspiration for artists and early pioneering landscape photographers, including Francis Frith. In 1893 during a great storm the Elephant Rock was washed away. The 'Moladh Elephantus' project and exhibition re-imagines the rock through drawing, installation and museology practices. Like Frith's mass produced postcards, the contemporary silkscreen printing allows for multiple production of the central elephant rock motif and provides an experimental platform for improvised deconstructive processes of the image and the paper support. The project further tests the 'Moladh' thematic, Gaelic for 'In Praise of', around how we eulogise geographical sites that no longer exist and perceptions of permanence, fracturing, and the fragility of our environment. The mima exhibition further examines the elephantusmorphism of stone and alerts us to the plight of other Elephant Rocks that exist across the world.
