Abstract
The class of all state observers for linear systems is characterized. A free parameter in observers is restricted within the ring of strictly proper stable rational functions. The order of observers is lower than the known ones by the number of output. When input disturbances exist in the plant, the resultant parameterization of estimation error dynamics is also given, which provides a tool to solve reduced-order robust estimation problem.
