The aim of the present symposium is earnestly to pursue the theme of the 51st convention, that is, the way to apply contemporary language theories to practices of teaching/learning in advanced English education. Thus in the symposium, each panelist respectively makes a brief explanation of the given common linguistic phenomenon, passives/passivisation, as an archetypal model from his/her own views: Dabrowska’s paper on user-based grammar from a cognitive vewpoint, Roberts’s paper on Universal Grammar and language shift, Ikegami’s paper on a contrastive/typological approach to passives, and Toyota’s paper on stylistic analysis of linguistics features. As an organizer as well as a discussant, Omori’s task is to organize all these suggestions into a digestible form that can enhance the linguistic knowledge of participants/readers, which would lead to construction of a firm foundation for teaching.
